AACCA College

The following is a general summary of the 2012-13 AACCA College Rules changes. For the complete rules, click here.  For a PDF version, click here.

  • Handstand stunts now require an additional spotter, regardless of the height level of the top person.  The inverted position of the top person and the hand grip with the base creates an increased risk of head injury to the top person in the event of a skill failure. (D.3)
  • A double based front flip dismount from a stunt to the ground no longer requires an additional spotter.  The previously required spotter did not provide any significant increase in safety during the dismount. (D.9.b.1)
  • In front flip dismounts from single based stunts, the required spotter may assist with the initiation of the flip. (Removed previous wording from D.9.b.1)
  • Section D.9.b has been reorganized to emphasize that a spotter is required on all of the skills listed, with the one exception of the double base front flip to the ground noted above.
  • Rule E.2 has been reworded to clarify that the front and back spotters on 2 ½ high pyramids are in relation to the pyramid, not the crowd.
  • Tower pyramids now require an additional spotter behind the pyramid who is not in contact with the pyramid. The common use of someone behind the pyramid who is bracing the middle layer puts them in a position where they cannot be an effective spotter in the event that the top person falls backward. (E.3)
  • Previous Surface and Game rules have been consolidated into section H, Specific Surface Restrictions.
  • In keeping with the high school cheerleading rules and using available data, rubberized track surfaces have been added as an approved surface for certain skills.  Note that basket tosses, 2 ½ high pyramids, and certain other skills are still prohibited on the basketball court without a mat.
  • All high school level inversions are allowed on the basketball court.
  • Twisting dismounts up to 1 ¼ rotation are allowed on the basketball court, but require an additional spotter.
  • At football games, flipping baskets that twist and non-flipping baskets with more than 1 ¼ twist can only be done on a mat during pregame, postgame or halftime.  This rule has not changed from last year.
