    AACCA Jim,

At the high school level, is it a mandate that bases must always be taller that their flyer?
I have great solid bases that are about three inches shorter than my flyer.

No, there is no such rule. There are bases, tops and spots of all different heights that are very successful.

NFHS Rule 2-4-5b deals with the spotter’s responsibilities. “b” specifically says that the spotter must “remain visually focused on the head, neck and shoulders of the top person, except when it is necessary to briefly check other stunts and/or personnel.”

Usually getting this as a rule deduction means that a required spotter was looking at the crowd or away from the person they have the responsibility of protecting.

I am a new coach at the middle school level. My girls said that there old coach told them extensions are illegal. Is this true.

Not by our rules. Extensions are legal for middle schools. The only restriction on middle schools is no basket tosses. Schools, districts or states can put in more restrictive rules, so double check there to be sure.

When you say “qualified coach”, what do you mean for high school level? What type of training or credentialing must they have in SC to coach? I worry about the cheerleaders at our high school. Someone is always getting injured!

“Qualified” means someone who has enough knowledge about cheerleading for what they are performing. It is the same as with any of the other athletics. If you hire a basketball coach, they need to be knowledgeable about the rules of basketball as well as how to properly run practice drills, etc. They may or may not have specific credentials and courses that they’ve taken. On the other hand, completing a course doesn’t automatically make someone “qualified”. It does give them more information about what needs to be done to minimize risk, but it doesn’t guarantee they will follow the rules and other issues outlined in the course. You will need to check with the South Carolina High School League (http://www.schsl.org/) office to see what specific requirements are in place.

Can a swinging stunt end in an extension? Also, can you start in a retake position and be dropped/swung in a downward direction and then end in an extension?

For high school rules, the answer is “yes” to both.

Full down from a two man stretch – Does flyer have to catch a specific base or can she catch both upon dismount?

There is not a specific requirement for where the top person catches in a cradle.
